Full Time

Coordinated Campaign Youth Outreach Director

The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party is hiring a full-time Youth Outreach Director for the 2024 cycle. This is a mid level position for those interested in an organizing position. This position will report to the Coalitions Organizing Director and is based in Saint Paul. The preferred start date for this position is June 10th, and runs through the Election.

We are looking for a dynamic individual who is passionate about empowering the next generation of leaders and advocates and ensuring young people get out to vote this year in this historic election. In this pivotal role, you will lead our efforts to connect with and mobilize young people as we work to support all of our DFL endorsed candidates.

As the Youth Outreach Director, you will play a central role in fostering engagement, amplifying voices, and empowering young individuals to actively participate in the democratic process.

  • Manage Campus Organizers and Fellows: Recruit, train, manage, and support a team of full time campus organizers and part time campus fellows as they work to turn out voters on college campuses
  • Direct Voter Contact: Plan, lead and execute grassroots field activities for volunteers such as phone banks, voter registration events, dorm storms, and canvasses (door knocks)
  • Attend DFL Club Meetings: Meet with and direct College Dem and High School Dem organizations to do voter outreach and turnout
  • Connect Youth with Local Elected Officials: Engage with local candidates to ensure they are involved with their College Dems chapters
  • Goals and Reporting: Meet or exceed metric based goals for volunteer recruitment & retention as well as mobilizing Democrats
  • Additional Responsibilities: Other duties as assigned by supervisor, Coordinated Campaign leadership, Executive Director or Chair

  • Prior experience organizing young people (>25) in an electoral, issue based, or other relevant campaign
  • Demonstrated ability to meet and exceed goals
  • Reliable access to transportation
  • Ability to work long or irregular hours, including nights and weekends
  • Cultural Competency – Able to build authentic relationships across lines of difference, such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, ability, gender identity, citizenship status, or other identities. Understands how to take an inclusive lens into all aspects of work
  • Support for all of our DFL endorsed candidates

Preferred but not required:

  • Minnesota experience or ties to the state
  • Attended high school and/or college in Minnesota
  • Leadership experience in a school based organization, such as College Democrats, Student Government, LGBTQIA+ groups, Ability/Disability Rights groups, Reproductive Freedom groups, and/or other issue based groups/organizations, etc in college or high school

COVID Addendum: While many meetings and events can still happen virtually or over the phone, organizers will be expected to work in-person, within reason and with safety precautions in place, at events in the community. This means that the prospective staff will need to live in the turf that they are applying for.

Compensation: This position is covered under a collective bargaining agreement between the Minnesota DFL Party and IBEW Local 292. Salary is $4,750/month. These are current wage rates – they will change through the negotiation process with the labor union. Employees of the DFL are paid on a bi-weekly basis and receive a competitive benefits package including health care and dental.

To Apply: Send a one-page cover letter and resume to Coco Millard, at [email protected] with the email subject line “Youth Outreach Director”

Note to Potential Applicants: If you are ready to channel your passion for democracy into action, but don’t think you meet all the qualifications, we still invite you to apply for this opportunity. We are looking for folks with a variety of backgrounds and experience and are dedicated to building a team that looks like Minnesota.
