MNGOP Convention Countdown: Ahead of Republicans’ Endorsement for U.S. Senate, Jason Lewis’ Comments About Women Prove He’s Unfit to Represent All Minnesotans

05/11/2020

Ahead of the Minnesota GOP State Convention on Saturday, May 16, Republicans are poised to throw their support behind U.S. Senate candidate Jason Lewis.

It’s no secret that Lewis has a long history of sexist, misogynistic, and demeaning comments about women. Before being elected to one term in Congress, Lewis referred to “young single women” who care about contraceptive coverage as “without a brain,” publicly complained about not being able to call women “sluts,” and mocked victims of sexual assault for being traumatized, saying “is that really something that’s going to be seared in your memory that you’ll need therapy for?”

Lewis has also questioned the constitutionality of sexual harassment law, saying “Ever noticed how I can call Michelle honey on the radio program and not be sued for sexual harassment, but if I did it at the office, look out the lawyers come calling. You know why, in all seriousness, I can call her honey, sweetheart, dear. Anything I want, even if she’s an anarchist. Because it’s called free speech. But under the current statutory scheme, the ridiculous nature of sexual harassment law, you have no free speech in the workplace. Did you know that? The First Amendment does not apply based on geography…and all of this is fundamentally unconstitutional as it is now interpreted.”

Lewis’ views and comments about women are divisive and offensive, yet he continues to stand by themtoday. It’s no wonder why he lost in 2018 and why he will lose again this November.
