ST PAUL – Today, Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party Chairman released the following statement following the passing of Mary Monahan, who chaired the Minnesota DFL Party from 1983-1985.
“Mary gave back to Minnesota her entire life,” said DFL Party Chairman Ken Martin. “Thanks to Mary’s hard work during her time as Chairwoman, Minnesota remains the state with the longest running streak of voting blue in presidential elections. After wrapping up her time with the DFL, Mary kept serving our most vulnerable communities, volunteering for 18 years as a foster grandmother at a juvenile detention center. Mary practiced what she preached about helping the less fortunate, and we could all learn from the example she set.”
Monahan chaired the Minnesota DFL during the 1984 presidential election, when Minnesota was the only state to remain blue. Before becoming Chairwoman, Monahan spent several years volunteering for the DFL and working her way up from receptionist to associate chair before taking over as Chairwoman.
Monahan also worked for DFL leaders like Joan Growe and Wendell Anderson and volunteered as a foster grandmother for 18 years at Dakota County Juvenile Center.
